The Closure of Monal

Monal Restaurant, one of Islamabad’s iconic dining spots, is closing its doors, leaving many wondering why this beloved establishment is shutting down. Built by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) in 2005-6 and leased to a private party for 15 years, Monal became a cherished venue for residents and tourists, thanks to its breathtaking views of the Margalla Hills. Nevertheless, its closure in 2024 has sparked citywide discussions, bringing environmental concerns to the forefront.
Why is Monal Closing?
Monal’s closure stems from a longstanding legal dispute over land ownership. The restaurant was constructed on land within the Margalla Hills National Park, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB). This protected area has been a source of contention for years, with questions about the legality of commercial enterprises like Monal operating in such a sensitive ecological zone.
In 2021, a series of court rulings were made that called for the removal of all illegal constructions on the Margalla Hills National Park, including Monal. Environmentalists have long argued that commercial establishments like Monal negatively impact the fragile ecosystem of the national park, disrupting wildlife habitats and contributing to pollution. These concerns were echoed by government officials and various conservation groups, who pushed for the enforcement of stricter environmental regulations.
The Supreme Court’s Final Decision
On June 11, 2024, the Supreme Court of Pakistan made a decisive ruling, ordering the immediate cessation of all operations within the Margalla Hills National Park. The decision was rooted in environmental concerns, citing the need to protect the area’s biodiversity. After this ruling, Monal officially announced that it would permanently close on September 11, 2024, marking the end of nearly two decades of service.
Nature Over Nostalgia
While the closure of Monal Restaurant stirs deep emotions, it also highlights a critical issue—the need to focus on environmental conservation. As much as we treasure the memories tied to places like Monal, the impact on our natural surroundings can’t be overlooked. Protecting the ecosystem, ensuring wildlife safety, and maintaining the purity of national parks are responsibilities we must all embrace.
As a human and a patriot, I firmly believe safeguarding nature is paramount. Bidding farewell to Monal is undoubtedly difficult, but it is a necessary step toward a more sustainable and Eco-friendly future. Let’s emphasize the health of our planet over nostalgia, working together to protect the beauty of our environment for generations to come.
We must also recognize the environmental impact of such establishments. Protecting our ecosystem is not just the responsibility of the government or conservation groups. It’s a duty we all share as citizens and patriots. Saving nature and ensuring an Eco-friendly future should be our priority, even if it means bidding farewell to beloved landmarks like Monal.
Let us move ahead with a commitment to safeguarding our natural heritage for future generations.
